Why did you choose to attend Tulane?
I chose Tulane because of the vast amount of opportunities that Tulane and the city of New Orleans has to offer! Here in the SBPS Nutrition program I am able to obtain a diverse skillset in multiple areas of nutrition and public health in ways I did not get in undergrad. I have been able to still be rooted in nutritional sciences and dietetics while also exploring global health, population nutrition, food policy, food sustainability, and public health and nutrition research. The dietetic internship at Tulane is also more community focused which allows me to expand my skills beyond just clinical work. Lastly, the nutrition program has many partners around New Orleans focused on bettering the food environment and health of its citizens which is amazing to be a part of.
Why are you interested in volunteering as a student ambassador?
I was in leadership positions throughout my undergraduate studies where I was able to connect with and mentor other students. I loved being able to make these connections and help students reach their goals and dreams. I also have been enjoying my experiences here at Tulane and in New Orleans so far and want to encourage others to come here and make their own memories.
What's your dream job?
My dream since senior year of high school has been to becoming a registered dietitian nutritionist. I specifically chose a master's in public health to complement this dream because I believe that finding solutions to the nutrition issues that someone faces is bigger than the individual behavioral choices that they make. I want to work on a more national and global level one day as a dietitian to make nutrition education and healthy foods more accessible to people around the world. With climate change and weather disasters also becoming more severe, I now have an interest in using my nutrition and public health expertise in the realm of food sustainability to ensure that we are able to feed everyone on this planet as well.
What advice would you give someone thinking about getting a degree in public health?
My advice is to be open to all the possibilities out there! What I love about public health is that there are so many kinds of jobs, concentrations, and research going on that you can find multiple ways to explore your different interests and find your calling. Take advantage of you time during your public health degree to try out as many things as you can and grow your knowledge and skills. You never know where you will end up and all that you do here can prepare you for your next steps after graduation.
Any hobbies, interests, etc. outside of public health?
Cooking, Baking, Painting, Crocheting, Embroidery, Sewing I love Sci-Fi (Star Trek and Star Wars) and Superheroes (Marvel and DC)
What is the best thing about being a student at Tulane thus far?
The best thing about being a student at Tulane is the connections you are able to make with all of the staff, faculty, and students. Everyone is so welcoming and are here to help with whatever you feel you need to reach your goals in the program. Plus, by being a public health student you get to live in New Orleans! I love being downtown and getting to explore all the small businesses and restaurants plus there is so much culture and history to learn here. You will never be bored in New Orleans!
