Areas of Specialization
The job market is competitive across disciplines, and this is particularly true in the field of public health. Graduates need to have a solid base of knowledge while also demonstrating depth in one or more areas. Tulane graduates gain both thanks to the cross-cutting foundational curriculum as well as the subject matter competency gained by the degree program (epidemiology, health policy, etc.).

Now Tulane is giving students an even sharper competitive edge with Areas of Specialization. These are secondary areas of specialization that students can focus on alongside their degree program. Courses in the Areas of Specialization fulfill elective requirements, so no additional credit hours are needed, making areas of specialization a cost-effective way for students to stand out in their careers.
To full the requirements for each specialization, students must take four courses for a total of 12 credits.
Starting Fall 2025, three Areas of Specialization will be offered, with more to be added in future semesters. All specializations represent important topical themes in public health and are taught by full-time subject matter experts.

Note: Areas of Specialization courses are taken in addition to Foundational Courses and Core Degree Requirements. Please talk to your Success Advisor if you have questions.
Areas of Specialization are only available to current MPH or MSPH students at the Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.
Areas of Specialization may be noted on your resume or curriculum vitae but they do not confer any special designation on a student diploma. Courses will be noted in the student transcript, but the specialization will not be noted at this time.
