Student Ambassador: Carol Shirley

Why did you choose to attend Tulane?

I decided to attend Tulane WSPH to pursue my DrPH degree because it was important to me to connect with faculty and staff who could support my interests. I have a non-public health background and I bring that perspective to my work. As I was researching programs, I connected with several faculty and staff who made me feel welcomed, safe, and valued.

Why are you interested in volunteering as a student ambassador?

Since I've been in this program, I've had the opportunity to serve as a teaching assistant and as a tutor. I've discovered a deep desire to be helpful, and I want to share my lessons learned in case it helps someone else save some time and effort.

What's your dream job?

I'm interested in working to expand public health workforce capacity through "training the trainers" on developing and delivering effective health communication.

What advice would you give someone thinking about getting a degree in public health?

I would encourage anyone considering a degree in public health to focus time on understanding the importance of health communication regardless of their area of interest. Every one of us plays a role in helping people understand health information.

Any hobbies, interests, etc. outside of public health?

One of my interests is watching documentary films. I was a Full Frame Documentary Film Festival Fellow as a graduate student and I studied media production as an undergraduate student.

What is the best thing about being a student at Tulane thus far?

My cohort has developed a strong bond that will be the foundation for lifelong friendships and professional connectedness. I've become a part of an incredible community of wonderful people who also happen to be public health experts I can depend on.
