Biography

Jonathan Niles (he/him) is a doctoral student in the department of International Health and Sustainable Development interested in impact evaluation and sustainable health system strengthening, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.  His doctoral research focuses on the geographic disparities in human resources allocation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Prior to joining Tulane, Jonathan led a multinational team in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as a software engineer and program implementer for IMA World Health.  His main role was to coordinate data collection through various tools (e.g. DHIS2, iHRIS, ODK Collect), and develop bespoke software solutions to analyze and evaluate public health programs.  Despite transitioning to his doctoral studies, he still develops and implements BHIMA, an open source hospital information system for rural hospitals in the DRC.  As he gained familiarity with the strengths and challenges faced in rural medical institutions, and increasingly sought ways to quantify impacts of policy or health interventions.  This journey led him to his current academic pursuits at Tulane SPHTM.

Jonathan grew up in Cap Haitian, Haiti and is fluent in Haitian Creole, French and English.
