Mission

CHELA logo

Launched in 2015, the Center for Health Equity in Latin America (CHELA) engages Tulane University faculty, students, and global partners to lead innovative research initiatives that examine health equity in Latin America and the Caribbean, provide visibility for the region’s under-recognized health inequities, and inform policies to address the needs of the region’s impoverished and marginalized populations.

Vision

By leveraging health equity research as a catalyst for national and international policy decisions, the Center for Health Equity in Latin America in Latin America strives to document and mitigate regional inequities in health outcomes and access to quality health care, and thus impact the lives of disfranchised populations throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

Collaborative platform

The Center for Health Equity in Latin America in Latin America partners with international organizations, academic institutions, and not-for-profit organizations based in Latin America and the Caribbean to conduct joint research projects, trainings, and publications. This collaborative platform allows CHELA to create an extensive network of partners that can achieve a broader impact in improving health equity throughout the region. Existing partner institutions are based in Brazil, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and the United States. CHELA works closely with the Health Equity Network of the Americas and collaborates with international organizations.
