Biography
Gael Compta (he/him) is a Ph.D. student in the Department of International Health and Sustainable Development at Tulane University School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine. Gael holds a Master of Sciences (MSc) in Economics from the University of Nottingham (United Kingdom), and a Bachelor of Sciences and a Master of Arts (MA) in Economics from the Université de Bordeaux (France).
His research interests include family planning, sexual and reproductive health, and the use of econometrics to analyze health policies. He is keen on studying policies that aim to improve women and children’s health in low- and middle-income settings.
While at Tulane, he has worked on multiple projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo that aim to increase access to family planning services. He has worked as a teaching assistant in the Survey Data Analysis in Family Planning and International Health Policy courses.
He comes to Tulane with experience from the World Health Organization and the European Central Bank as a statistical researcher and analyst. Gael was based in Manila, Philippines working as a consultant for the World Health Organization Western Pacific Regional Office as part of the Division of Health Systems. His main task was to support countries in the Western Pacific Region in monitoring their progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and universal health coverage (UHC). He worked with regional health data alongside government officials on how to best use this information for policy decisions. He was also tasked with an in-country mission and provided technical support to the Lao PDR country office in the preparation of their Health System Development report and the Provincial Health System Development reports. Prior to this role, Gael was based in Frankfurt, Germany working as a statistical research analyst for the European Central Bank.
