Biography

Dr. Hammack is a Research Assistant Professor at Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (SPHTM), in the Department of Social, Behavioral, and Population Sciences. She currently serves as Director of the Gun Violence Policy Lab, a project of the Center for Youth Equity within Tulane's Violence Prevention Institute (VPI). Dr. Hammack earned her PhD in Community Health Sciences in 2019, and findings from her dissertation, Assault-Related Penetrating Trauma and Gunshot Wound Recidivism in New Orleans, were used to inform the development and priorities of the City of New Orleans’ Office of Gun Violence Prevention (OGVP). Before joining Tulane, Dr. Hammack worked as the Research and Evaluation Supervisor at Louisiana Office of Public Health’s STD/HIV/Hepatitis Program (SHHP). Additionally, she has a Master of Social Work degree from Tulane School of Social Work and has worked in various roles within fields of HIV/AIDS and youth advocacy for over 20 years.

Research Areas

Areas of interest for current and future research involve identifying systemic factors contributing to increases in gun violence. Examples include, examining the relationship between housing instability and gun violence, as well as the role that social media plays in perpetuating gun violence among adolescence.
