Biography

Dr. Gurpreet Kaur received her MD from Kharkiv State Medical University and her MPH in Disaster Management from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She joined the Department of Environmental Health Sciences as a faculty in 2015. As an adjunct Assistant Professor, she has taught various public health and disaster management courses with our Department of Environmental Health Sciences and has also served as the Student Advisor for Culminating Experience and Practicum.

She currently teaches the course, Psychosocial Aspects of Disasters. The course covers the theoretical development, history, and empirical studies of the psychosocial dynamics and sequelae of disasters.

In 2018, Dr. Kaur founded a nonprofit organization, Kaur Institute of Disaster Studies which focuses on addressing the gaps in emergency preparedness of vulnerable populations and on disaster mental health.

Her work focuses on utilizing her academic expertise and evidence-based knowledge to create community-based educational programs that are linguistically and culturally tailored for diverse, at-risk populations. She believes that education and knowledge can drive social change and meaningful action; and has led various educational and training initiatives since 2015.

She also serves as a Lecturer at the California State University, Dominguez Hills, School of Public Health and Health Sciences.
