MPH, MSPH, or MPH&TM in the Combined Degree Program

Students who are admitted to the combined degree program begin graduate coursework during their senior year then continue on to full-time graduate study following award of the BSPH, BS, or BSM degree. Full-time graduate study may then begin in either the fall or spring semester, which accommodates those who graduate in either May or December. (See Application Timeline for details.) The MPH, MSPH, and the MPH&TM degrees require 42 - 45 credits (depending on the program) plus an Applied Practical Experience and an Integrated Learning Experience.

BSPH/MPH, MSPH, or MPH&TM

BSPH combined degree students take four graduate foundational core courses during their senior year, for a total of 12 credits that may be applied to both the BSPH and the MPH, MSPH, or MPH&TM degree requirements. BSPH combined Degree students take the following foundational core courses:

  • SPHL 6050 Biostatistics for Public Health (3)
  • SPHL 6060 Epidemiology for Public Health (3)
  • SPHL 6070 Health Systems, Policy and Management (3)
  • SPHL 6080 Design Strategies in Public Health Programs (3)
  • Note: SPHL 6020 Introduction to Public Health (3) is waived for BSPH Combined Degree Students

BS or BSM/MPH, MSPH, or MPH&TM

BS and BSM combined degree students take four graduate foundational core courses during their senior year, for a total of 12 credits that may be applied to the MPH, MSPH, or MPH&TM degree requirements. BS and BSM students who are also Public Health minors can apply 9 graduate credits towards public health elective credits for the minor. BS and BSM Combined Degree students take the following foundational core courses:

  • SPHL 6020 Introduction to Public Health(3)
  • SPHL 6050 Biostatistics for Public Health (3)
  • SPHL 6060 Epidemiology for Public Health (3)
  • SPHL 6070 Health Systems, Policy and Management (3)
  • SPHL 6080 Design Strategies in Public Health Programs (3)

Accepted combined degree students should meet with their faculty advisor during their senior year to create a study plan that will incorporate the goals and competencies of the MPH, MSPH, or MPH&TM program they intend to pursue. Accepted combined degree students must complete all requirements for the BSPH, BS, or BSM degree and graduate before moving onto full-time enrollment in the masters program.

The MPH, MSPH, and MPH&TM portion of the combined degree may be completed in approximately 1½- 2 years after graduation from the undergraduate BSPH, BS, or BSM. An MPH, MSPH, or MPH&TM degree typically takes 2 to 2½ years to complete, so the combined degree provides a time savings of approximately one (1) semester. Actual completion time may vary depending on the number of credits students complete per semester and the time to complete the practicum and culminating experience.
