Paul K. Whelton presented honorary degree in Italy

Paul K. Whelton, Show Chwan Health System Endowed Chair in Global Public Health at the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, recently received an honorary doctorate degree from the Universita Degli Studi Di Modena E Reggio Emilia (Unimore) in Italy.

The university presented Whelton with the degree in “Clinical and Experimental Medicine” at a ceremony held to honor Whelton for his achievements in epidemiology and the prevention of hypertension.

"The impact of his studies on the epidemiology of hypertension is evidenced by the numerous references and practical application of his findings," a statement from Unimore’s Department of Biomedical, Metabolic and Neural Sciences read. "It is for these reasons that we are truly delighted to present Prof. Whelton with this honour, in the certainty that his contributions will continue to inspire and guide the scientific and medical community towards new heights."

Whelton, a former School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine Dean and a pioneer in hypertension research, has had a remarkable career that has been honored in recent years by the Whelton Symposium at Tulane, a David M. Hume award, and the prestigious St. Patrick’s Day science medal.

Unimore, one of the oldest universities in Italy, was founded in 1175 and is located in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy.
