Biography
Margaret M. Van Bree is a health care executive serving as a Senior Advisor and Clinical Professor in Health Policy and Management. Prior to joining the faculty at Tulane, Dr. Van Bree was the president of Rhode Island Hospital and its pediatric division, Hasbro Children’s Hospital, the principal teaching hospital for the Warren Alpert Medicine School of Brown University. Dr. Van Bree also had responsibility for psychiatry and behavioral health services, including Bradley Hospital, a pediatric psychiatric hospital and Gateway Healthcare, a community mental health organization. Prior to joining Rhode Island Hospital in January 2015, Dr. Van Bree was senior vice president and chief executive officer for CHI Baylor- St. Luke’s Medical Center in Houston, Texas, the adult private teaching hospital for Baylor College of Medicine and the home of the Texas Heart Institute. She has also been chief operating officer at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, the University of Virginia Health System, and M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center.
Dr. Van Bree has previously served on the faculty at several universities, including Brown University, the University of Minnesota, the University of Virginia, the University of Cincinnati, and Tulane University. She is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and on the boards of Bryant University, the University of Minnesota MHA Alumni Association/Foundation, and Crossroads Rhode Island. Dr. Van Bree was presented the 2021 Maurice O. Graff Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and was the Career Achievement winner in the 2017 Providence Business News Business Women Awards program. She has previously been recognized as one of Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women and as the recipient of the Exemplary Leadership Award from the Ronald McDonald House.
Dr. Van Bree earned a doctor of public health in health systems management from Tulane University, a masters in health care administration from the University of Minnesota, and a bachelor of science in community health education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
