Biography

Jeffrey M. Elder, MD serves as the Chief Medical Officer at University Medical Center New Orleans (UMC), New Orleans' Level 1 Trauma Center, where he continues providing medical care as an emergency medicine physician. Dr. Elder also serves Associate Chief Medical Officer for Emergency Management for LCMC Health, an eight-hospital system serving the greater New Orleans area including UMC. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in the LSU Health Section of Emergency Medicine and Co-Director of the Division of EMS and Disaster Medicine. Dr. Elder is board certified in Emergency Medicine with subspecialty board certification in Emergency Medical Services by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

In his adjunct capacity with Environmental Health Sciences, Dr. Elder will work closely with Dr. Murphy as part of the Region 6 Center for Health Security & Response Readiness. This initiative, funded by the Centers for Disease Control, aims to strengthen public health emergency preparedness and response for state and local jurisdictions in the region through close partnerships with the practice community. Dr. Elder will also contribute to guest lectures in the classroom and seminars in the department from time to time.

Dr. Elder is a member of the board of directors for the National Registry of EMTs and previously served as the Director and Medical Director of New Orleans EMS, the Chief Medical Officer for the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness as well as for multiple local fire departments. During his tenure with the City of New Orleans, Dr. Elder also served as Interim Director of the New Orleans Health Department in 2012. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, where he also completed his Emergency Medicine Residency, and a Bachelors of Science in Zoology from LSU in Baton Rouge.
