Black Maternal Health Week at WSPH

Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women, per data cited by the CDC. This disparity continues to need recognition and corresponding action to correct -- hence the establishment of Black Maternal Health Week, which takes place every year from April 11 - 17.

Tulane University's Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine works to address these issues throughout the year, not just during April, but to coincide with Black Maternal Health Week, the school has hosted several events in recent days to further the conversation.

On Friday, April 11, Dr. Veronica Gillispie-Bell addressed interested parties uptown with her discussion, “We can do better, we must do better.”

Earlier this week, “How Local Community-Partnered Research is Addressing Black Maternal Health Disparities” was held with Dr. Kristen Dorans, Dr. Kelli Hall, Dr. Emily Harville, and Dr. Melissa Evans. Tuesday morning’s chat “Reproductive Advocacy Politics within the Community” featured Nancy Davis, Frankie Robertson, Madison Jones, and Genesis Grindstone.
