Tulane Faculty Member Named 2024 Top Scholar by ScholarGPS

Dr. Preston Marx, professor emeritus of tropical medicine and a renowned virologist, has been recognized as a 2024  Top Scholar  by ScholarGPS for his scholarly contributions in public health and virology. This recognition places Dr. Marx among the top 0.5 percent of scholars worldwide, based on lifetime measures of research productivity, impact, and quality.

ScholarGPS evaluates over 30 million scholars globally using metrics such as publication counts, citation frequency, and “h-index,” a metric used to assess the impact and productivity of a researcher. Marx received notable rankings in several categories, including General Public Health, Transmission (medicine), HIV/AIDS, and Simian Immunodeficiency Virus research—where he ranks in the top ten worldwide.

This recognition reflects Marx’s longstanding commitment to advancing scientific understanding of emerging infectious diseases and underscores the global impact of his work.

Marx retired from Tulane in 2022, but remains connected to the school through his emeritus status. In 2010, his research on the origins of HIV in Africa was recognized by Discover magazine as one of the top 20 scientific discoveries of that year.
