Juan J. Gershanik, MD
Biography
Juan Gershanik was born in Concepcion del Uruguay, Argentina, and received his medical degree from the School of Medicine o the Universidad Nacional de Rosario. He did his training in pediatrics/neonatology in the U.S. and came to Louisiana in 1971 to head the Section of Neonatology at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport, where he developed the first neonatal intensive care unit with an organized transport system for sick newborns in the state. In 1979 he moved to New Orleans to serve as Director of Neonatology at Southern Baptist Hospital (1979-1993), later renamed Memorial Medical Center. He practiced there until Katrina struck (2005) and he helped in evacuating the NICU babies to Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge. Currently, he is the Medical Director of the Newborn Services, Chair of the Pediatrics Department and a member of the Medical Executive Committee at West Jefferson Medical Center. He is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Tulane University School of Medicine and at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans and is a member of the Advisory Council to the President of Xavier University. Dr. Gershanik has been a member of the DAC since 2008.
