Biography

Angela Breckenridge is a New Orleanian and a scholar-practitioner in the social sciences, trained in mixed and qualitative methodologies and whose research interests lie at the intersection of teaching, learning, and behavior change. Her current project is a scoping review of evidence-based interventions for COVID-related behaviors. Recently, Dr. Breckenridge has had the honor to lead a cross-disciplinary committee of faculty, staff, and students in a multi-level strategy to embed principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion across Tulane’s public health curricula and in the classroom.

Dr. Breckenridge mentors doctoral students in the groundbreaking DrPH program at the SPHTM, collaborating on the curriculum and teaching Leadership Theory and Practice. Likewise in the online MPH program, she develops curriculum and teaches Social and Behavioral Aspects of Health, Foundations in Public Health, Health Communication Theory, and facilitates the Integrated Learning Experience. At the spring 2023 commencement ceremony, over 85 students who walked across the stage had had one on one support through their culminating experience from Dr. Breckenridge. She is fiercely committed to the success of students in these graduate and postgraduate programs.

Dr. Breckenridge came to the field of public health by way of organizational consulting for Freeport Copper and Gold (PTFI), initially designing and implementing needs assessments and monitoring and evaluation of indigenous programs for the 7 Kapala Suku tribes whose lives and culture are affected by the copper and gold mine site in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. She led teams of internal consultants in participatory research designs that engaged tribal leaders in assessing assets and developing workforce training and competency assessment efforts. She has since designed and directed faculty development programs in pedagogy for nursing and business schools, community colleges and curriculum designs for professional public health practice, Leadership Institutes, eProfessor Academies, BSPH, MPH, PhD and DrPH degree programs.

Dr. Breckenridge’s professional expertise is centered in human and organization development and a lifelong pursuit to understand methods of advancing the potential of individuals and organizations. She has worked extensively with NGOs, profit and non-profit organizations, colleges and universities, and branches of the military on assessing community needs, cultural climate, workforce competency, quality measures and change readiness for decision-making; program designs for executive leadership, interprofessional collaboration, strategic planning and evaluation, faculty and staff development, academic and workforce curriculum, performance evaluation and comprehensive communication planning.

Dr. Breckenridge has an unwavering commitment to student learning. Her teaching philosophy is embedded in the principles of inclusive pedagogy, humanism, and transformational learning. This is seen in the individual feedback provided for each student on signature assignments to ensure no one is left behind and all students can achieve the academic standards and learning outcomes of the course.

Currently, Dr. Breckenridge is involved in the design and integration of new Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) competencies throughout the public health curriculum and the corresponding EDI pedagogy introduced and normalized throughout all SPHTM classrooms -- both online and residential.

Dr. Breckenridge resides on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain with her husband Tedd and son Elliott.
