Biography

Richard (Rich) Priore is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Tulane University, where he teaches healthcare financial management, quality management, and health economics. Previously he served as an associate professor in the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health and most recently as a distinguished service professor in the Opus College of Business at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The intersection of his industry and academic backgrounds lends practitioner insight with an evidence-based management perspective. His leadership experience spans 30 years in the investor-owned, not-for-profit, and government healthcare sectors with senior executive roles in integrated and academic health systems, physician-owned specialty hospitals, complex clinical service lines, and large multispecialty group practices. He served as a CEO for several investor-owned hospitals and as a hospital turnaround expert for the Hunter Group. Rich was a principal architect of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Acute Care Episode (ACE) Demonstration project that led to the current shared savings and bundled payment policies and programs to incent providers to eliminate unnecessary services, improve coordination of care, and achieve better outcomes.

He is board certified in healthcare management and a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE). His recent book Improving Financial and Operations Performance: A Healthcare Leader’s Guide provides a practical ‘how to’ approach for driving organizational excellence. Rich is a U.S. Army veteran with tours of duty in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Washington, DC, where he served in the White House under two Administrations. He is a volunteer first responder in the National Ski Patrol.
