Earthquakes hit Japan, Ecuador

Over the weekend, two different communities suffered the devastating effects of massive earthquakes. The largest of two earthquakes on the Japanese island of Kyushu registered a magnitude of 7.0 while Ecuador was hit with a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Both occurred on Saturday.

We here at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine understand the impact of disaster both as researchers and as a community that has undergone disaster. Our thoughts and prayers are with both Japan and Ecuador. We trust that the global public health community will come together in response to these tragedies to provide aid, assistance, and mitigation.

We encourage those in our community who wish to help to contact the American Red Cross, which is actively responding to both emergencies. You can also visit a donation page set up by the Ecuadorian community at Tulane. That group will be gathering donations at the Lavin Bernick Center on the uptown campus through April 26th.
