Meet compelling public health leaders … along with a little bit extra

This September, the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine will launch a new series: the Dean’s Leaders and Lagniappe Lecture series.

The monthly series puts SPHTM directly in contact with some of the brightest leaders in the field of public health. Notable speakers will include leaders from across the country’s institutions of higher learning.

Each lecture will include a visiting dean or deans in discussion with our own Dean Thomas LaVeist, who will serve as moderator and host. Following their conversation, attendees will be invited to ask their own questions of the guests.

“We have the awesome responsibility to prepare future generations of the public health workforce for an uncertain future. Through this series we seek to provide an opportunity for these future leaders to meet, hear from and learn from today’s public health leaders,” said LaVeist.

In addition to hearing from public health leaders, each month’s lecture will also serve as a showcase for some New Orleans lagniappe, which is defined as “something given as a bonus or extra gift.” This little something extra will feature local artists as well as collaborators with SPHTM in the Diboll Gallery following the lecture.

Leaders and Lagniappe will debut with guest Dr. Ashish Joshi, dean of the University of Memphis School of Public Health. Joshi has an exciting background in combining data-driven innovative entrepreneurial approaches to advance excellence in public health education and research to address public health challenges in the community.

The series will continue with more exciting speakers throughout the fall semester.
