Biography

Trained as a sociologist and demographer, Dr. Meekers has conducted extensive research on sexual risk behavior and reproductive health. He has been involved in several studies aimed at improving the design of social marketing and behavior change communication programs in developing countries, and at assessing the impact of behavior change programs. He currently provides technical assistance in monitoring and evaluation for two family planning projects in Nigeria that are funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation: 1) the Postpartum and post-pregnancy family planning project (PoPCare), which is implemented by the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), and 2) the Honey & Banana family planning program, which is implemented by DKT/Nigeria. In addition, he is a co-investigator on a grant that aims to promote COVID-19 testing among Vietnamese-Americans living in New Orleans. Prior to joining the faculty at Tulane, he was research director at Population Services International (PSI), a leading social marketing organization with offices in over 50 countries. In that capacity, he was responsible for overseeing monitoring and evaluating the effect of social marketing programs on behavior change.
