Certificate in Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics addresses public health from the basis of genomics, proteomics, and epigenomics using applied data analysis. The Certificate Program in Bioinformatics gives students from outside of this field additional expertise to better address the issues in their particular area of study. The program adds value to the student’s field of study, giving them an additional tool in their public health tool box, useful in research, other academic settings, or in a professional career.

Certificate Purpose

The Certificate in Bioinformatics provides students who are pursuing an MPH, MSPH, MPH&TM, or MHA in another area with additional expertise in bioinformatics methodology in the fields of genomics, proteomics, and epigenomics applied data analysis.

Eligible Students

This certificate program is designed for current MPH/MSPH/MPH&TM/MHA students who are not pursuing the Master of Science in Bioinformatics. The certificate is a complement to degrees in other areas.

Certificate Competencies

Students who earn the Certificate in Bioinformatics will be able to:

  • Summarize and describe the fundamental concepts and principles of bioinformatics (BINF 6010);
  • Analyze and interpret various types of bioinformatics data (BINF 7010, elective courses);
  • Select and conduct statistical analyses, such as bivariate and logistic regression analyses (BIOS 6040); and
  • Apply database management techniques for the maintenance of large data sets typical of health-related data systems (BIOS 6220).

Required Courses
  • BINF 6010 Principles of Bioinformatics (3) (spring) (prerequisites: none)
  • BIOS 6220 Database Management in Health Sciences (3) (spring) (prerequisites: none)
  • BINF 7010 Population and Quantitative Genetics (3) (spring) (prerequisites: BIOS 6030, BIOS 6040, and at least one of BIOS 6230, BIOS 6240, BIOS 6280)
  • BIOS 6040 Intermediate Biostatistics (3) (fall, spring) (prerequisites: BIOS 6030 and at least one of BIOS 6230, BIOS 6240, BIOS 6280)

One or two of the following 7000 level Bioinformatics Electives (3):

  • BINF 7300 Bioinformatics Approach to Transcriptomics (spring) (prerequisites: BIOS 6030, and BINF 6030 or BINF 6100 or TRMD 6010)
  • BINF 7500 Epigenetics and Epigenomics (fall) (prerequisites: BIOS 6030, and BINF 6030 or BINF 6100 or TRMD 6010)
  • BINF 7600 Nutritional Genomics for Disease Prevention and Intervention (spring) (prerequisites: BIOS 6030, and BINF 6010 or BINF 6100 or TRMD 6010)
  • BINF 7210 Statistical Methods in Bioinformatics (fall) (prerequisites: BIOS 6030, BIOS 6040, BINF 6010)

NOTE: If BIOS 6040 is required for the major, two 7000-level Bioinformatics Electives (6 credits) are required for the certificate.
