Trop Med Seminar: Evaluation of the efficiency of novel strategies for eliminating HIV/SIV reservoirs in lymphoid tissues

Downtown Campus

Presentation by, Dr. Widade Ziani, Postdoctoral Fellow, TU

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has successfully reduced HIV-associated mortality and morbidity but is not curative. The major obstacle to a cure is persistence of latently HIV-infected cellular reservoirs, resulting in lifelong infection and viral rebounds in HIV-1-infected individuals upon ART cessation. Our current research focuses on developing and testing novel strategies to eliminate HIV reservoirs in lymphoid tissues using SIV/SHIV-infected nonhuman primates as a model of HIV infection and pathogenesis. We developed an assay to measure cell-associated SIV DNA/RNA in order to monitor viral infection and replication
