DTM Seminar Series: “Understanding the emergence of multiple HIVs from multiple SIVs naturally infecting non-human primates in Africa"

Online

Featuring Dr. Preston Marx, Professor of Tropical Medicine and Core Scientist Tulane National Primate Research Center

Online https://tulane.zoom.us/j/92082894616

Original field and laboratory research will be presented on how Simian Immunodeficiency Viruses naturally infecting chimpanzees, gorillas and sooty mangabeys transitioned to become pandemic and epidemic strains of HIV type 1 in the Congo River basin and type 2 in West Africa. Our laboratory has focused on the inadvertent human serial passageof SIV as the mechanism for HIV emergence. Using humanized mice in collaboration with Colorado State University, we have tested this theory. Understanding the now routine emergence of pathogenic viruses from animal sources will lead to uncovering the social and biomedical factors of virus emergence and their prevention
