Master's Degree Programs
Professional Degree Programs
Tulane prepares students for careers in public health domestically and internationally with study in all five areas of public health plus tropical medicine. Students can pursue the MPH, the MSPH, or the MHA degrees in a total of 16 professional master’s programs, offered through six departments.
Students receive a strong foundation in the public health core areas with specialization in a concentration to advance their professional and academic goals. All professional and pre-professional master's degrees require a minimum of 42 to 45 credits that include the public health core requirements, a practicum, and a culminating experience. Individual departments may have additional requirements. Certificates that complement a student's area of study are also available - additional credit hours are required.
BSPH Combined Degrees
High-achieving students in the Tulane BSPH program have the opportunity to pursue a professional master’s degree in public health (MPH, MSPH, or MHA) in combination with their undergraduate degree in a total of 14 master's programs. Interested students must declare their intention by spring of their junior year or three semesters before graduation. Admitted students complete their undergraduate degree requirements while taking 12 credits of graduate level coursework during their senior year, resulting in a savings of one semester toward their professional degree.
Master of Public Health Programs
The Master of Public Health (MPH) is the recognized professional degree for leadership careers in public health. The MPH degree is based on a multidisciplinary field of study that addresses the health of populations throughout the world and covers the five core areas of public health (epidemiology, behavioral science, environmental health, biostatistics, and management). Students with an MPH degree are prepared for practice in a wide range of public health settings including local, state, federal, and international organizations and the private sector. Epidemiology (EPID): Epidemiology is the science upon which public health and population science are based. Epidemiology deals with the incidence, distribution, and possible control of diseases and factors relating to health. Epidemiologists discover the patterns, distribution, etiology, and risk factors of disease in human populations through the collection and analysis of health data.
The MPH in Epidemiology provides a strong foundation in epidemiologic principles and methods along with applications in a chosen area, e.g., cardiovascular disease, chronic disease, infectious disease, environmental health, or reproductive, molecular, cancer, or genetic epidemiology.
Epidemiology is a program choice of students who like to explore disease etiology, collect and analyze data, develop evidence-based public health and population-based health activities, work on clinical trials and biomonitoring studies, investigate disease outbreak, and conduct surveillance.
Background: Students have a wide range of backgrounds that include undergraduate public health, biological sciences, math, computer science, medicine, and social and behavioral sciences.
Graduates are prepared to serve as mid-level epidemiologists in public health practice or research settings and work in public health agencies, NGOs, and healthcare organizations where epidemiologic information is needed for health policy decisions or in research. Community Health Sciences (GCHB): Community health sciences utilize community-based approaches for health promotion and disease prevention activities and interventions. Community health deals with the social determinants of health to improve the health of populations and to reduce health disparities and inequities.
The MPH in Community Health Sciences provides a generalist approach to health promotion and disease prevention using community-based methods to improve the health of populations. The program includes a sound foundation in the social determinants of health and skills for the planning, design, implementation, communication, and evaluation of preventive strategies and interventions at the community level, and the incorporation of cultural competency in community strategies.
Community health is a choice for those who would like to work to work with people and have a desire to improve the health of people in communities and serve as community advocates. This concentration provides the knowledge and skills to implement health promotion programs in communities and uses behavioral change to achieve healthier lifestyles, enact prevention strategies (e.g., smoking cessation, violence prevention), and incorporate cultural competencies in diverse community settings.
Backgrounds: Community health draws students from wide and varied backgrounds including undergraduate public health, social and behavioral sciences, communications, the biological sciences, and many other areas that involve working with communities.

Health Education and Communication (GCHB): Health education is the field that develops educational and communication strategies to promote healthy behaviors and reduce risk factors for disease in individuals and communities.
The MPH in Health Education and Communication provides a strong foundation in using communication and education in behavioral change for health promotion and disease prevention. The program has a focus in health communication, health education community organization and development, health advocacy, and the evaluation of public health campaigns. The program provides the skills for students to become certified health education specialists (CHES).
Health educators advocate for health, advance health literacy in communities, develop policy and interventions, and evaluate health promotion programs and campaigns. These professionals have an interest in disadvantaged communities in the U.S. and developing countries.
Background: Health education draws upon backgrounds in undergraduate public health, the social and behavioral sciences, liberal arts, communications, and those who enjoy writing and media arts, teaching, and working in communities.
Graduates of this program find careers as health educators, policy advocates, and health promotion and education coordinators at community organizations, public health agencies, healthcare organizations, and in wellness programs in the public and private sector. Maternal and Child Health (GCHB): Maternal and child health (MCH) focuses on improving the health of women, infants, children, adolescents, and their families.
The MPH in Maternal and Child Health develops skills for implementing and evaluating programs and interventions targeting women and children over the life span, assessing the effectiveness of the programs, and understanding the impact of cultural diversity on MCH in a global context.
MCH is a choice for those who through would like to work on women's health issues before, during, and after pregnancy and children's health from newborns through adolescence in both domestic and global settings.
Background: Those with a background in the behavioral sciences, undergraduate public heath, biological sciences, social and behavioral sciences, liberal arts and sciences, and those who like using a hands-on approach and working with women and children are good candidates for this program.

Nutrition (GCHB): Public health nutrition addresses the nutritional health of individuals, households, and communities through the social and environmental causes. Nutrition includes complex issues related to the overabundance of food (obesity) and the lack of it (hunger) from behavioral, environmental, and socioeconomic viewpoints.
The MPH in Nutrition provides the knowledge and skills to identify nutritional issues in developed and developing countries, conduct nutritional status assessments of populations, and plan, implement, and evaluate nutritional programs. The program provides skills to identify nutritional issues in developed and developing countries and use biochemical, clinical, dietary, and ecological methods to assess the nutritional status of populations.
This program is the choice of students who seek to improve the health of communities through healthy eating behaviors and develop approaches to solve nutritional issues and evaluate nutrition programs.
Background: Students have backgrounds in the biological sciences, social and behavioral sciences, and undergraduate public health.
Graduates work in local, state, and federal public health agencies, in health and wellness programs in the public and private sectors, in the policy arena, with nongovernmental agencies addressing hunger, or with nonprofits addressing food and food system issues. Disaster Management (GEHS): Disaster management is the field of study that prepares people to respond to natural and technological disasters and to manage and mitigate the environmental public health impact on populations and communities.
The MPH in Disaster Management uses a systems-based approach for preparing for and responding to disasters and emergency incidents. Students apply scientific principles to assess and mitigate the environmental public health impact on populations and address policy related to disasters.
Students obtain knowledge and skills for preparedness planning, environmental monitoring, assessing the psychosocial dimensions of disasters and community resilience, crisis communication, and developing environmental policy. Students in disaster management can handle rapidly changing situations, are highly organized, and can make quick decisions and interact well on multidisciplinary teams. Students have the ability to apply science and management principles in critical events and are able to systematically prepare for events.
Background: Students with backgrounds in undergraduate public health, biological sciences, population-based sciences, and policy, and have an interest in preventing and mitigating disaster-related threats to communities and their environment would be good candidates for this program.

Health Systems Management (GHMP): Health systems management is the leadership, management, and administration of public health systems. It includes elements of planning and financial management, program evaluation, and coordination of complex systems.
The MPH in Health Systems Management introduces students to the fundamental functional areas of management within the context of health services, taking a systems approach that examines legal, ethical, and policy concerns facing the health sector. The program addresses the dynamics of the workforce, logistics of healthcare delivery, and strategies to deliver effective and efficient healthcare and health-related programs.
Health Systems Management is a choice of students who thrive in management roles and are interested in the overall administration of programs and organizations.
Backgrounds: Students enter the program with a wide range of backgrounds that include undergraduate public health, biological sciences, business, medicine, and social and behavioral sciences.
Graduates of this program can anticipate careers in leadership and management in the public or private sector, whether domestically, in other industrialized nations. or in emerging economies. Specific settings for such careers include institutions that deliver preventative, curative, or palliative care to individuals; entities engaged in funding health sector programs or in payment for care; government agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) focused on public health; settings devoted to policy formulation; and enterprises providing goods and services in support of the above. Health Policy (GHMP): Health policy includes the decision, plans, and actions designed to achieve healthcare goals at a local, state, or national level.
The MPH in Health Policy provides students with an understanding and foundation in health policy processes, concepts, and issues as well as analytical skills to help develop and evaluate health policies.
Students in this concentration are interested in health policy in the United States or in other countries, and can tailor their program accordingly by selecting courses in domestic or international health policy and economics. The Health Policy program prepares students for careers in government research institutes, international health organizations, consulting firms, and other organizations geared toward affecting health policy.
Backgrounds: Health policy draws upon backgrounds in undergraduate public health and biological sciences, political science and law, and social and behavioral sciences.

International Health and Development (GCHB): International health addresses the management of public health programs in developing countries, with particular attention to the planning, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of programs. This is a field that embraces both quantitative and qualitative approaches to address health concerns that impact populations in diverse cultures.
The MPH in International Health and Development draws upon the longstanding strengths of the school and provides students with direct, skills-based learning that can be applied immediately in the workforce. The program offers strengths in preparing students to work in a particular disease or health area (e.g. HIV, malaria, reproductive health, monitoring and evaluation).
International Health and Development is an ideal program choice for students interested in providing technical assistance or in improving the health of populations spanning a variety of cultures, worldviews, and circumstances, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
Backgrounds: Students come into this program from a range of backgrounds including undergraduate public health, biological sciences, and social and behavioral sciences. Prospective students generally have worked or lived in low- and middle-income countries, or they aspire to do so.
Alumni work within a range of organizations in global public health and development including governmental and non-governmental agencies, community-based organizations, and other partnerships. Typical jobs include analyst, project designer, proposal developer, fundraiser, project coordinators, desk officers, or program/project managers. Examples of employment agencies include local, state, and federal health departments; NGOs, private voluntary organizations, and faith-based organizations; federal and multinational agencies involved in domestic and international work. Master of Science in Public Health programs
The Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) is a public health professional degree that includes a science orientation. Students obtain a public health foundation in the five core areas (epidemiology, behavioral science, environmental health, biostatistics, and management) with additional study in a scientific topic. Students are prepared for public health practice in their area of study as well as in research. The MSPH is offered with concentrations in:
Biostatistics (BIOS): Biostatistics utilizes statistical reasoning and quantitative methods applied to public health and medical settings and research. Biostatistics involves the collection and analysis of data and the interpretation and inference from these results.
The MSPH in Biostatistics provides a strong foundation in applied data analysis in public health and biomedical research. The program provides skills for designing statistical analysis for research and practice, estimating sample size, establishing and maintaining databases, selecting and conducting appropriate statistical analysis, and communicating and visualizing the results.
Biostatistics is the choice for students who enjoy using data to find solutions in the areas of public health and medicine. Those who enjoy using quantitative methods to solve problems are well suited to biostatistics. The quantitative skills obtained in this program are in high demand in healthcare organizations to analyze data for health outcomes related to medical treatment and procedures and in the assessment of effectiveness of public health programs.
Background: Students with strong mathematical, analytical, and computing skills enter this program.

Global Environmental Health Sciences (GEHS): Environmental health sciences focus on the public health aspects of the environment’s impact on health. Environmental health scientists assess and mitigate the impact of water quality, air pollution, and hazardous wastes on health, and direct the management of natural resources to promote health and prevent disease.
The MSPH in Global Environmental Health Sciences prepares students to recognize, evaluate, and control environmental health problems, evaluate environmental data, and manage the delivery of environmental health services to populations. Students may study water quality and resource management, toxicology, or environmental policy. The program includes U.S.-based and global environmental public health topics.
Students who choose environmental health have a science background and are interested in promoting health and preventing disease by managing environmental media and change. Students in this program use evidence-based science to assess and manage the impact of the environment on public health.
Background: Students with strong scientific backgrounds in biology, chemistry, geology, earth science, and other physical sciences often choose environmental health.
Graduates in environmental health are in high demand by local and international agencies and industry and consulting firms. Graduates work in organizations that assess and manage water quality, air pollution, and hazardous waste, and conduct risk assessment and toxicology studies in the U.S. and globally. Industrial Hygiene (GEHS): Industrial hygiene is the science of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace conditions to prevent injury or illness in workers. Industrial hygienists use environmental and workplace monitoring and analytical methods to identify risks and exposures and use engineering, work practices, and protective equipment to control potential health hazards.
The MSPH in Industrial Hygiene provides the knowledge and skills to identify workplace hazards; apply engineering controls such as ventilation systems to minimize exposures; employ analytical methods and techniques; select, evaluate, and manage the use of personal protective equipment; interpret and apply governmental regulations; and communicate findings to workers, managers, regulators, and the community. The program is ABET-accredited and graduates may sit for the exam to become certified industrial hygienists (CIH).
This program provides great career opportunities for those who have an interest in science and technology and like to investigate problems and design solutions. The workplace offers a great opportunity to prevent injuries and illness and to promote healthy behaviors in the workforce.
Background: Students who enter the industrial hygiene program have a strong background in math and science. Students must have 60 undergraduate credits in math, science, engineering or technology with at least 15 credits in the upper level courses.
Graduates in industrial hygiene are highly sought by employers as industrial hygienists and occupational safety and health specialists in industry and governmental agencies. Tropical Medicine (TRMD): Tropical medicine addresses parasitology and emerging infectious and vector-borne diseases widespread in tropical and subtropical regions, including malaria, dengue, viral hemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola and Lassa, and Schistosomiasis. The vectors of tropical diseases – mosquitos, ticks, parasitic protozoa, and helminthes – are central to the transmission and spread of tropical diseases. The program educates students in disease etiology and transmission, disease pathogenesis, and basic biology of pathogens and vectors, and prepares students for careers in the control and treatment of infectious diseases around the globe.
The MSPH in Tropical Medicine provides advanced education in infectious diseases, with a solid foundation in parasitology, immunology, microbiology, biomedical sciences, and public health. Laboratory-based study is central to the degree, with research and a thesis required as part of the degree requirements.
This degree is particularly well-suited for students wishing to pursue research in infectious diseases.
Background: Students entering the Tropical Medicine program generally have a strong background in biology and biomedical sciences.
Students graduating with the MSPH in Tropical Medicine find administrative or research positions in public health, biomedical sciences, or related fields at academic institutions, governmental agencies, healthcare organizations, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, and non-profit corporations. Master of Health Administration program
The Master of Health Administration (MHA) trains future managers and leaders who strive to improve the delivery of health services in diverse settings. The MHA program is the most widely accepted management degree in the U.S. healthcare system. Graduates are employed with public and private hospitals, ambulatory care organizations, long-term care institutions, health maintenance organizations, insurance companies, multi-institutional systems, and other organizations concerned with the planning, delivery, and financing of personal health services. The MPH draws on the multi-disciplinary expertise of our faculty who create and disseminate knowledge that improves managerial practice and strengthens health systems worldwide. The program has been fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) since 1971.
Health Administration (GHMP): Health administration is the leadership, management, and administration of hospitals, hospital networks, clinics, and healthcare systems. Hospital administrators are responsible for managing healthcare systems and organizations.
The Master of Health Administration (MHA) trains the future managers and leaders for healthcare systems and the delivery of healthcare services. The program develops knowledge and a strong foundation in business and managerial skills, finance and financial models, quality improvement, health economics, communication, organizational behavior, and healthcare policy. Students complete 60 hours of coursework in addition to an integrated residency experience. The MHA is the standard credential and most widely accepted healthcare management degree in the United States. The MHA is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME).
This program is a strong option for students interested in the business of healthcare. Those interested in becoming healthcare administrators and in improving the effective delivery of quality healthcare at a provider and systems level may select this degree.

Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine Program
The Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (MPH&TM) is a practice-oriented program that prepares students to recognize and control infectious diseases found in tropical and subtropical regions and developing countries. This degree is unique to Tulane and reflects a century of work with tropical diseases.
Public Health and Tropical Medicine (TRMD): Tropical medicine is the branch of public health that addresses the prevention, control, and treatment of vector-borne and tropical infectious diseases, such as malaria, viral hemorrhagic fevers, and other diseases found in tropical climates. Tropical medicine bridges basic laboratory science, international field work, and the clinical aspects of health for the prevention and treatment of tropical infectious diseases.
The MPH&TM combines the MPH public health curriculum with biomedical, epidemiological, social, and control aspects of tropical diseases. A clinical track for physicians and other medical professionals is also available. This program prepares future practitioners who will plan and evaluate disease control and prevention programs and physicians who will find themselves in a position to treat and evaluate tropical diseases.
The Clinical Track MPH&TM is available to licensed medical health professionals (MD, RN, DSS, DVM, etc) and provides advanced training in the clinical care of patients with tropical diseases. Completion of the Clinical Track MPH&TM qualifies an individual to sit for the Examination in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Traveler’s Health offered by the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
Students who aspire to control vector-borne and other tropical diseases in low- and middle-income countries, or have already done so, may be particularly interested in this program.
Background: Students entering this program generally have a background in undergraduate public health, biological sciences, or medical sciences.
Students graduating with a MPH&TM degree generally seek employment in a wide range of non-governmental health and service organizations, as well as government agencies. The Master of Science (MS) degree is an academic research degree with study in biostatistics, bioinformatics, epidemiology or clinical research.
