The Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics will change its name to the Department of Global Biostatistics and Data Science effective September 15, 2016.
According to Department Chair Dr. John Lefante, the new department name emphasizes the global aspects of data science research along with the department’s long-term strengths in biostatistics, bioinformatics, and genomics. Global Biostatistics and Data Science also highlights the department’s increasing focus on the growing field of Big Data, data analytics, and database management, all based on statistics and informatics methodology.
In a statement, Dean Pierre Buekens said, “The new name does not change what the department does on a daily basis, but it is significant in better sharing their role to our outside audiences.”
“This name change strengthens our school’s enduring global commitment to public health,” he concluded.
