MSPH in Nutrition

The MSPH Nutrition Program emphasizes the social and environmental determinants of nutrition problems and how to solve them through nutritional assessment of populations, community nutrition actions, health promotion programs, and food and nutrition policies. The program trains future public health nutritionists to manage programs and shape policies that improve the nutritional health and food security of populations. A full spectrum of contexts is addressed, including humanitarian crises in low-income countries, problems of sustainable development in low– and middle–income countries, and dual burden problems (under– and over–nutrition) common to middle- and high-income countries. Two tracks are available to students: a generalist public health nutrition track; and the nutrition - maternal and child health leadership track, which interweaves the MSPH program with the Tulane Dietetic Internship.

The mission of the MSPH Nutrition Program is to train future public health leaders to shape policies, administer programs, and to communicate to the public to improve nutritional health and food security of population groups across a full spectrum of economic context.

This program is a member of the Association of Graduate Programs in Public Health Nutrition (AGPPHN).

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the school's admission and application requirements for entrance into master's programs at SPHTM.

Public Health Nutrition Track: An introductory course in nutrition and the equivalent to the Biological Basis of Health and Disease course (TRMD 6010) are required as pre- or co-requisites. Students from other universities with undergraduate degrees in nutrition, dietetics, or food science and nutrition will automatically meet these pre-requisites. Students who took an introductory nutrition class and have a degree in the biological sciences or were a pre-medical or a nursing student will also meet these pre-requisites.

Those admitted public health nutrition track students who have not yet met these pre-requisites can take the undergraduate courses, SPHU 2300 Introduction to Nutrition and SPHU 1020 Cell, Individual, and Community at Tulane University on the Uptown campus to satisfy their pre-requisites. However, because these are undergraduate courses, these credits will not count towards the 45 graduate credits that are needed for the MSPH degree. Accepted students should check with their advisor regarding these pre-requisites.

Tulane Public Health undergraduate students interested in the combined BSPH/MPH degree can meet these program pre-requisites by taking SPHU 2300 Introduction to Nutrition and SPHU 1020 Cell, Individual, and Community.

Nutrition - MCH Leadership Track: Students applying to this track must have completed a Didactic Program in Dietetics from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) and include their DPD verification form with their SOPHAS application.
