BIOS Research and Centers

Research Areas

BIOS faculty maintain active research in two areas: 1. Statistical methods development and research applications addressing a wide range of topics in public health and medicine using interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches; and 2. Bioinformatics research on human complex traits and diseases

Biostatistical Methods

Areas of methods research include: missing data techniques, experimental design, re-sampling methods, robust estimation, survival analysis, longitudinal data analysis, next generation sequencing data analysis, statistical genetics, computational biology, data management techniques, and biomedical and clinical informatics.

Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics research uses state-of-the-art multi- and inter-disciplinary approaches of genomic technologies, and statistical and bioinformatical methods.  Major projects focus on osteoporosis and other projects address obesity, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Collaborations

Faculty actively collaborate on research projects at the Tulane SPHTM, the Tulane School of Medicine, Tulane Cancer Center, the Louisiana Cancer Research Consortium and the Louisiana Clinical and Translational Science Center (LaCats). They provide the statistical components for research projects including data analysis and analytical support for the study design and data management in a wide variety of areas, including STIs and HIV, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, health promotion, PTSD, cancer, aging, occupational health, environmental health, and mental health.

Research Centers

Tulane SPHTM Research Data Center (RDC)

RDC seeks to establish Tulane as a global leader in data management and analysis to facilitate large interdisciplinary research proposals and meet the demands for enhanced scientific rigor and transparency requirements. RDC provides data center function which consolidates data capture and management resources within a secure core facility that provides a restricted access location for data management activities. The RDC works with SPHTM Information Technology to provide infrastructure and technical support and connects researchers and project technical staff for data capture, management, and analysis. Services and areas of specialization include:

  • Setup and oversight of mobile data collection systems
  • Setup and oversight of online and offline data capture and management systems
  • Questionnaire and case report form design (paper-based and electronic)
  • Data curation, management, and integration
  • Study design, sample size assessment, and rigor and transparency requirements
  • Data monitoring and reporting
  • Global positioning system (GPS) data collection
  • Mapping and spatial analysis
  • Data sharing, archival, storage, and preservation

These services are available for both domestic and international research projects.
