Another devastating week

Disaster continues to be in the news.

Hurricane Maria is barreling through the Carribean, leaving extensive damage in its wake, just over a week after Irma took a similarly devastating path. Numerous islands have endured the brunt of tropical weather this season, with countless homes and businesses destroyed. We send our thoughts to those who’ve been in the path of these storms and hope the storms will abate as we move into the fall.

And again, Mexico has endured another powerful earthquake, this time centered closer to Mexico City. The death toll is rising, especially heartbreaking since at least one school was leveled by the quake. We mourn with the citizens of Mexico, who have long been our friends and colleagues.

As we did last week, we point you to the local agencies of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies if you would like to aid in the local relief and recovery efforts.

We know our community is active in these types of efforts, as well. If you are on the ground assisting in any of the recent global disasters, please share your story with us on social media or via email. Public health is always at the forefront of disaster, and we know our alumni are almost always among them.
