May 2007 Owl Club Recognizes Top Med School Faculty MD/MPH student Andrew Schutzbank serves as vice president of Tulane School of Medicine's Owl Club, which honors faculty. MD/MPH alumni Nicole DeSimone (MD/MPH 2005) wins the Owl Award as a resident in OB/Gyn.
February 2007 Study to Track Post-Katrina Asthma in Kids Tulane University and the New Orleans Department of Health will jointly lead a 30-month study called HEAL: Head-off Environmental Asthma in Louisiana. The purpose of the stuy is to learn more about the effects of mold and other indoor allergens on children with asthma in post-Katrina New Orleans. Tulane will receive $2.1 million to conduct the study. Dr. Maureen Lichtveld (MD/MPH ENHS advisor and ENHS chair) is the principal investigator of the study. November 2006 New TB Diagnostic Tool Shows Promise An international team of researchers, including Dr. Richard Oberhelman (MD/MPH&TM advisor), working in Peru has concluded that a new method for diagnosing tuberculosis is faster and more reliable than current standard tests for the disease. September 2006 $4.47 Million Awarded to Mentor Public Health Professionals Tulane is slated to receive $4.47 million from the USAID Global Health Fellowship program to help recruit and mentor public health professionals with an interest in international health and development. Ms. Penny Jessop (MD/MPH INHL advisor) is leading the Tulane component. August 2006 One-Year Remembrances Recall Highs and Lows MD/MPH students Sara Dwyer and Eric Simms participate in Tulane's downtown campus gathering at noon on Tuesday (Aug. 29) for remembrance services to reflect on the record-breaking hurricane that caused massive physical damage and soul-wrenching human anguish. May 2006 Taking Blood Pressure Meds Depends on Family, Access to Doctors People with high blood pressure are three times less likely to take their medications regularly if they have caretaking responsibilities for children or other relatives, says Dr. Marie Krousel-Wood, a researcher at Tulane University, and associate dean for the MD/MPH Combined Degree Program. National Scientific Body Seeks Local Input on Disaster Preparation, Recovery The Institute of Medicine and National Academies of Science are inviting experts and Gulf Coast residents to spend two days discussing issues as diverse as debris removal, waste disposal, local emergency planning, wetland restoration, safe home environments and the healthcare infrastructure.
