The Owl Club held its annual awards ceremony on Friday (May 11) in the medical school auditorium, with a reception and banquet following the awards.
The medical students presented the top faculty prize, the Clifford Newman Student Advocacy Award, to N. Kevin Krane, vice dean for academic affairs, who was among those instrumental in keeping the medical school running through the year it was in exile in Houston after Hurricane Katrina.
This award honors the late Wiley Clifford Newman Jr., a physiologist and longtime associate dean of the medical school who won an Owl Club outstanding teaching award four times.
This year the medical school suffered a tragedy with the loss of Leon Weisberg, chief of the section of neurology. To honor his memory, the Owl Club created the Leon A. Weisberg Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching with the help of his wife, Laurie Weisberg. The first recipient of this award was Elma LeDoux, associate professor of cardiology. A former student of Weisberg's, she said she "could think of no higher honor than receiving an award in Dr. Weisberg's name."
"The Owl Club awards are a great chance for us, as students, to thank our faculty for their endless time and dedication. Students and faculty approach this event with great enthusiasm, as it is truly a celebration of everything that is wonderful about Tulane medical school," says Andrew Schutzbank, vice president of the Owl Club.
The annual Owl Club award winners are nominated and selected by the medical school class taught by the professors and residents.
