The Prevention Research Center The Prevention Research Center is participating in the planning of the new New Orleans and trying to incorporate health goals into these plans. As the city is rebuilt, we will also conduct research on the impact of changing neighborhood environments on health and health-related behavior. We will serve as a resource for policy-makers, local organizations, and community members on the environment and its impact on health. While we continue to have a particular interest in obesity and the behaviors that lead to it (physical activity and diet), in view of the changed situation, we are broadening our focus to include other health problems influenced by the environment. Tulane/Xavier National Center of Excellence in Women's Health The Tulane Xavier National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health (TUXCOE) is a collaborative effort between Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Tulane University Hospital & Clinic, Xavier University and local community partners. TUXCOE not only increases women’s health collaboration among the Tulane/Xavier-affiliated communities, but also strives to enhance women’s health through communication, empowerment and prevention. Research Most of the major killer diseases in developed countries stem from behavior – such as smoking, drinking, unhealthy diet, sedentary behavior, sexual risk-taking, and violence – so public health practitioners need to understand why people engage in these behaviors and what we can do to help people behave in a healthier way. The factors that influence behavior include knowledge, family structure, economic status, social norms, and the physical environment. In Community Health Sciences our laboratory is the communities we serve. We study why people adopt unhealthy lifestyles and how effective attempts are to help them adopt healthier lifestyles.
