The Nutrition Section provides students with the skills to improve the nutritional health of individuals, households, and communities by addressing the social and environmental causes of nutrition problems. Besides faculty members in the Department of Community Health Sciences, students work with faculty members in other departments who have interests and expertise in nutrition. We have close ties to many agencies in New Orleans working to promote nutrition, providing plenty of opportunities for practical field work.
If you choose this track you will take the required school core courses and department core courses (see Master of Public Health), and courses specific to nutrition including the following:
• Methods of nutritional assessment
• Design of nutrition programs
• Community nutrition interventions
• Food and nutrition policies
• Nutritional epidemiology.
The Nutrition Section also directs the Dietetic Internship, which is a six-month program for masters-trained graduates who would like to become registered dietitians. If you do not have a masters degree but would like to become a registered dietitian you might want to consider our combined MPH/RD Program.
